bilingual
and citizenship education
This program is provided
for the elderly during the day, Monday and Thursday, from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. The elderly have a more serious difficulty in
learning English than the young adults and thus take more time
in the program and the program assists them in preparing for
citizenship interviews.
social
security and Medicaid services
The elderly are unable to
communicate with the public service agencies such as the Social
Security Administration and County Public Assistance agencies
in obtaining SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and Medicaid
assistance. The social service program staff works closely with
the public service agencies and provides translation and interpretation
for the elderly so that they may obtain the necessary services.
This program is supported with a grant from the Pew Charitable
Trusts.
housing
referrals for low-income housing
Most of the elderly are eligible
for low-income housing assistance (Section 8) but they are unable
to apply for the service. Therefore, the social service staff
provides the necessary assistance so that the elderly may obtain
low-income housing assistance.
vegetable
gardening
The gardening program was
established with assistance from the Philadelphia Green and Bell
of Pennsylvania in 1985 for the elderly residing in West Philadelphia,
including Korean elderly and Cobbs Creek elderly residents.
interpretation
and translation
These are most important
services for the elderly because they do not understand English.
