School-based After-school and Summer Programs

Three after-school activity programs have been implemented at three public schools. The first program is the after-school tutoring program at Lowell and Olney Schools for children with academic problems. For the past fifteen years, it has been funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The second program is the multi-cultural activity program for middle school children from different ethnic backgrounds at Olney School to promote better understanding and personal growth. This program has been funded for the past two years by the William Penn Foundation. The third is the multi-activity program at Morrison School for children at risk to assist them in developing academic and social skills. This program has been funded by the City of Philadelphia for the past two years. During the past ten summers, the enrichment program has been provided at two schools, Olney and Lowell Schools. The purpose is to provide an activity program similar to a day camp for the children who cannot afford private day camp in the summer. This program has been funded by different foundations, including Pew, William Penn and Philadelphia Foundations.

Summer Career Exploration Program

This program is designed to provide an opportunity for high school youth to explore their careers by working in private sector professional and business offices for a six-week period. This program has been implemented for the past six years with support from various foundations, including the William Penn, Philadelphia, and Douty Foundations.

Summer Youth Employment Program

This program is for high school youths from low-to-moderate-income families and they are assigned to work with elementary school children who participate in the summer enrichment program at public schools. The program was part of the Phil-a-Job program funded by the Private Industry Council but recently supported by the Workforce Investment Corporation. For the past three years, the program has been implemented as part of the summer youth program of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
